Overheard

Actually I participated in this convo, but it’s still funny. Savannah and I walked down to the neighborhood grocery store, which, is essentially run by hippies. A man opened the door for me as I had the stroller (which was super nice) and said……

“How are you?”

me: “Fine thanks, and yourself?”

hippee: “Just tryin’ to stay positive, you know? There’s a lot of things that can keep a man down these days.”

I don’t remember what I said after that, but I hope it was accompanied by a sympathetic nod or something.

Keep on fighting grocery store hippee. We’re all pulling for you.

Fifteen Months

Whew! This has been a big month. You have started walking, talking a little bit, you had your first haircut and your first trip to Neiman Marcus. You have also started to assert your will in the way that only toddlers can do.

Of course, you make misbehaving funny. Right after throwing food off your high chair for millionth time, you look at me very soberly and say “ba ba ba ba ba” (translation “bad, bad bad bad”) while smacking your hand. I have never hit you on the hand, but have done the tisk tisk motion and you, of course, picked it right up.

You have also decided that you don’t want to go to sleep. You are still a great sleeper (touch wood), but when I say “OK, time to get in your crib”, you cuddle up to me like “nonononono! One more story!” It’s very cute and it works every time.

I feel like I have said “No” or some variation of it about a billion times the last month. You are just very interested in how things work and why shouldn’t you be able to take the cap of my lipstick and eat it?

You are still giving out kisses like a madwoman. The other week at about 4 in the morning I heard “mmmmmma!, mmmmmmmma!” and then you went back to sleep. I can only assume that Hoot woke up scared from a dream and you were just making it all better.

I am really enjoying our walks to the park and I love to see you explore a little and play on the jungle gym. You seem to be enjoying your new found mobility and the freedom it gives you. Of course, our trips to the park always end up with you sitting in the dirt scooping it up.

While you are completely exhausting, you are also a delight beyond words and I am enjoying this stage immensely!

Kisses to you little pumpkin!

Misc

The monthly update post is forthcoming, but in the mean time….here are a few, small, kind of shallow things that I have enjoyed the last few weeks.

1. Gelato – Conor, Savannah and I met some friends for dinner at a little Italian place by our house. They had home made gelato and I brought a pint home. It was SO good. I am almost glad it’s gone, because I really couldn’t control myself it was that delicious. I would have eaten a gallon.

2. The Soup Peddler – I generally enjoy cooking (especially baking) but am finding it nearly impossible to cook anything that requires more than 30 minutes of my time. Savannah is just too active and demanding of attention right now. A neighbor of ours, who has a four month old, recommended this place. They DELIVER food to your FRONT DOOR! And it’s good! And relatively cheap! It has really made dinnertime a lot easier for me. We get a delivery once a week and usually get two or three dinners. If you live in Austin and are busy, I highly recommend checking this place out.

3. The Shops at the Dominion – One of the really shallow things I missed about Texas while living in Seattle was the lack of a Neiman Marcus. I lived right down the street from the flagship store when I lived in Houston and although I rarely bought anything there when I lived there (partially because I made about $25 a year), there is something in the experience of shopping at that store. (I realize I sound like Holly Golightly right now, but it’s true) The customer service is THE BEST. I like shopping OK, but I LOVE a trip to Neiman’s

So anyhoo, a new super swank shopping center opened up today in Austin and it includes the first Neiman’s in Austin. Savannah and I got dressed up and headed out there this morning. We had a ball. First of all, the entire staff was working. I have never seen so many expensive black pantsuits coupled with high heels and perfect makeup, in my life. Then, everyone made a big fuss over Savannah. Then, we got to go look at all the clothes and shoes and bags. I didn’t buy anything, but I am haunted by a pair of Marc Jacobs pants that I saw. If I’m still thinking about them next week, I’m going to get them.

4. Liberal Documentaries – I love Netflix. Conor and I have been on a leftist documentary tear lately. We have watched Who Killed the Electric Car, An Inconvenient Truth, and Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices. All were pretty good and I learned something from each of them.

I totally recommend An Inconvenient Truth. Although it kind of infers that if you voted for George Bush in 2000, you, personally are responsible for global warming (which was a little heavy handed and great way to alienate the people that this movie should reach), the basic information is good and eye-opening. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about ‘green’ issues and how I can do my part and this was a good reinforcement.

I don’t really get why it won an Oscar though. It’s pretty much just Al Gore giving a PowerPoint presentation.

Next up: Fahrenheit 911, which I’m sure I will hate because I think Michael Moore is a big selective truth buffoon. His early stuff was great, but he’s gotten really annoying.

5. Running! I have started running again. I only go a short distance at this point, but just because I lost all the baby weight already, my child is 15 months old, it’s time I start exercising again. It’s been toooooo long. I go at night after Savannah is in bed. I feel great about it.

Back to baby pictures shortly!
